Tanachlashonhara

I have compiled a list of Torah sources from the Tanach, the verses that purely directly state how Hashem has instructed against groups/ individuals speaking Lashon Hara from the Torah.

Do not utter a false report. (Exodus 23:1 Parshah Mishpatim)

You shall not go up and down as a tale-bearer among your people (Leviticus. 19:16 From Parshah Kedoshim)

You shall not wrong one another (Leviticus. 25:17 – Parshah Behar)

Death and life are in the power of the tongue (Proverbs 18:21 – Book of Mishlei)

The verses above are all pure sources from the Tanach against Lashon Hara. Man was created in G-d’s image, this means that man has been given the ability to influence certain forces in the world as well. Evidently, in these verses, we have a hint of our capabilities and how we can influence the world for better or for worse. When we say things, this could change anything in any situation. We may not realize, but our words, thoughts and actions can potentially cause good, or G-d forbid, cause goodness to be withheld. We have the ability to create a negative world of darkness and despair, or to formulate a positive world of encouragement and hope, all stimulating from the words that come out of our mouths. We are capable of so much good. Why not take life on and have a good time! Depression, sadness, inability to think, not giving people the benefit of the doubt, bullying, self-righteousness, arrogance, insecurity ¬- ¬all can result from slander. Negative comments build on each other, creating a cycle violence, disharmony and strife, bringing more darkness into the world. Who needs it? Why not use good words, look at the good in people, smile, work in groups or partner up with friends – this can all lead to a much better life!!
